Egypt complete eSwatini double, qualify for 2019 AFCON

Egypt disposed of eSwatini for the second time in five days, officially qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A first half goal from West Bromwich center-back Ahmed Hegazi and an insurance strike from Al Ahly’s Marwan Mohsen sealed the home side’s elimination, and sent the Pharaohs to next year’s AFCON finals in Cameroon after Niger failed to defeat Tunisia.

It was a more subdued effort compared to Friday’s 4-1 win in Egypt, after an arduous trek that saw the Pharaohs travel to Europe before heading back through the African continent and down to the eSwatini capital of Mbabane.

The team was also without the services of star Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah, who flew back to England after picking up a minor injury.

Egypt and Tunisia became the second and third teams to officially qualify for AFCON 2019, following Madagascar’s 1-0 over Equatorial Guinea earlier in the day which saw the island nation qualify for African football’s showpiece event for the first time in history.

All that’s left to decide in Group J is who wins it, and who finishes runner-up. Egypt are currently second, three points adrift of Tunisia. The two teams meet next month in Egypt.
